FreiData

FreiData is the publication platform of the University of Fribourg for research data and other digital objects from research. FreiData can be used by all members and affiliates of the university with an account .

For all objects stored on FreiData, a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) can be requested. Digital objects are uniquely referenced worldwide via a DOI. Objects on FreiData thus become citable in principle.

FreiData assigns all uploaded objects to a general community “University of Freiburg”. Data providers can choose or add another community at any time. Each community can be identified by a subdirectory in the address bar of browsers. This allows publications in the context of a community to be displayed and exported together via a unique link.

Within a community there are different roles. With these roles, communities can compile procedures, for example, for a content check before assigning a DOI or an initial review of possible ethical considerations before release.

With FreiData, members of the university have a platform to publish data and research results. FreiData is an offer of the University of Fribourg to open up the research process in the sense of Open-Science. It is complementary to specialized services or repositories, for example the NFDI, to enable researchers of the university to have worldwide visibility of their data.

FreiData is offered by the University of Fribourg as part of the basic service to all members on a fair-use basis. Data donors are subject to the Terms of Use. Data packages should be curated as meaningful units of content, sufficiently documented by metadata in their structure and context according to FAIR principles1. If publishing large data packages is intended, please contact RDMG. Participation models that integrate in-kind contributions from funding agencies create scope for data-driven research even without in-house IT infrastructure.

High-throughput network connections make FreiData available even for data-intensive applications within the university. For long-term planning, the considerations of the working paper “Long-term archiving of data from research projects”2 can be referred to.

FreiData can be integrated into data strategies. In data management plans (DMP) it can be specified as a station of the life cycle of research data. Upon request by mail to rdm@mail.uni-freiburg.de , formulation aids for DMPs to be submitted with third-party funding applications will be provided.
